Domain Name Registration
Sunday, September 28th, 2008Domain Registration is a procedure through which an individual or a company buys a domain name, which can also be called as a website name or domain, for e.g. www.xyz.com. Buying a domain name is a legal process in which the buyer is the rightful owner of that domain name for the period of time defined in a contract. Mostly people buy a domain name with a one-year contract, but this can be a two-year or a five-year contract.
Domain registrations are available through registrars. Before a domain is registered, its name is being checked to know whether the name is already bought or is available. If the name is available, then the registrar will register the domain and provide the owner with all the details of the domain name. In that process, one also has to provide the WhoIs information, which is public information, available for all. If the owner is not comfortable to share their information, registrar’s information can be displayed instead.
The WhoIs information includes the name, address, phone number, etc. of the domain name owner. Before buying a domain name, just make sure that what rights do you own of the domain name and would the registrar allow you to transfer your domain name to another registrar. Because in some cases, the registrars do not allow domain name transfers.
Before a domain name is bought from a registrar, it is better to get detailed information about them. Like for how long they are in business, how many domain names they have sold thus far, are they reliable, how much it costs to buy a domain name from them, etc. This information should be saved so that while comparing different services, this will provide a quick review.
